Screen Use in Children: Understanding to Regulate Without Conflict

The question of screens is one of the most debated in parenting and child development. And one of the most anxiety-inducing, often fuelled by alarming figures and absolute positions that don't always reflect real complexity.

The truth is more nuanced: screens are neither uniformly bad nor uniformly good. Their impact depends on the type of content, the child's age, time spent, and the context of use.

What research actually says

For very young children (0-2 years)

Research is fairly clear: for children under 18 months, screens bring no benefits and can disturb sleep and language development. The exception: video calls with loved ones, which preserve human interaction.

For children aged 2 to 5

Quality educational content, in limited duration and accompanied by an adult who comments on what is happening on screen, can have positive effects on vocabulary and cognitive skills. Content quality matters more than raw time.

For older children

Passive use (watching videos without interaction) has more limited effects than active use (creating, coding, playing games that require thinking). Social context (alone vs. with family) also moderates effects.

Signs of problematic use

The child strongly resists when screens are turned off, prefers screens to any other activity, struggles to engage in non-digital games, presents sleep disturbances linked to night-time use — these are signals that warrant regulation.
