Shyness in Children: Between Character Trait and Developmental Obstacle

Shyness — a certain reserve in new or unfamiliar social situations — is a temperament characteristic present in around 15 to 20% of children. It is not a disorder in itself, and many shy children thrive perfectly well in their social lives, at their own pace.

In the article that follows, I explore social anxiety and fear of judgment. If you recognise yourself in this theme, I designed a social anxiety test that helps you take stock of your anxiety in social situations. It comes with a guide to extend your reflection beyond the results. I also wrote a book on this subject, Overcoming Anxiety and Stress, if you would like to go further.

But at a higher level, shyness can transform into social anxiety — an intense and invasive fear of social situations that generates avoidance and real suffering. The boundary between the two deserves attention. I examine this question in The Practical CBT Guide.

What characterises the shy child

Behavioural inhibition

Faced with new situations or strangers, the shy child stiffens, speaks less, clings to their parents, observes for a long time before participating. This is a response to social stress — not poor motivation or laziness.

Slow warm-up

Many shy children "warm up" progressively. They need time and repeated exposures to feel at ease in a new situation. Once comfortable, they can thrive fully. This profile is very different from generalised social anxiety.

Suffering linked to shyness

Some shy children experience their shyness as a painful limitation — they would like to participate, but cannot. This silent suffering deserves to be recognised.

What helps

Neither forcing nor fleeing

Neither pushing the child into situations that overwhelm them, nor avoiding them entirely. Progressive exposure — small steps in manageable situations — is what gradually builds social confidence.

Valuing without comparing

Avoid "look how at ease your cousin is." Value the child's small steps towards participation.

Seeking support if suffering is significant

When shyness generates significant isolation, school refusal, or visible distress, psychological support (CBT for social anxiety) can make a real difference.
