Inattention in children is often interpreted as laziness, disinterest, or poor motivation. This is rarely the case. Concentration is a skill that depends on many factors — biological, emotional, environmental — and that develops progressively throughout childhood.
When it causes persistent problems, understanding the origin of this inattention is essential for responding appropriately.
Forms of inattention
Inattention linked to ADHD
ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is one of the most frequent causes of persistent inattention. It is characterised by a neurological difficulty in sustaining attention, filtering distractors, and organising tasks. It doesn't disappear with motivation or willpower — and cannot be resolved with discipline alone.
Inattention linked to anxiety
An anxious child may appear inattentive because their mind is occupied with rumination, negative anticipation, and surveillance of their environment. In this case, the problem is not concentration itself, but the cognitive load linked to anxiety which saturates attentional resources.
Inattention linked to lack of sleep
An under-sleeping child can present symptoms similar to ADHD: agitation, difficulty staying still, fragmented attention. Sleep duration and quality are often the first variables to check.
Situational inattention
Some children are inattentive in specific contexts (a particular subject, in the presence of a specific adult) but not in others. This points more towards motivational or relational factors.
What helps
Identifying the cause, adapting the environment (reducing distractors, breaking tasks down), and if difficulties are severe, considering a neuropsychological assessment to access targeted support.
