Impulsivity in Children: Between Temperament and Warning Sign

Impulsivity — the tendency to act before thinking, to respond without waiting, to immediately give in to urges — is normal in young children. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for impulse control, is not fully mature until the end of adolescence.
But when impulsivity remains very pronounced beyond age 6-7, disrupts learning, relationships, and family life, it warrants assessment. It can signal delayed maturation of executive functions, or be one of the symptoms of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
What impulsivity can produce
In learning
The impulsive child answers before the question is finished, makes mistakes through rushing, abandons long tasks, loses their belongings through lack of organisation. They may come across as lazy or inattentive, when the underlying mechanism is different.
In relationships
They interrupt, intervene in others' games without being invited, react disproportionately to frustrations — which can generate repeated conflicts with peers, and sometimes a painful form of social rejection.
In the family
Adults can feel at their wits' end, as the child seems not to "hear" instructions, repeats the same behaviours without learning, and creates permanent tension. This is almost never wilfulness.
What helps
A structured environment
Predictable routines, short and explicit instructions, announced transitions — a structured environment reduces cognitive load and gives the child the markers they need to better regulate their behaviour.
Developing self-regulation strategies
Learning to pause, breathe, and anticipate consequences — these skills can be developed with appropriate psychological support (CBT, cognitive remediation).
Assessment if needed
If impulsivity is severe and persistent, a neuropsychological assessment makes it possible to distinguish temperament, developmental delay, and ADHD, and to guide towards appropriate support.
