After a Psychological Test: What a Real Conversation Reveals

📋 Assess your situation — Does this article speak to you? Take one of our 189+ psychological tests for immediate personalised results.

You've just taken a test — the attachment style test, the emotional dependency test, or one of the many others available on this platform. The result may have surprised you, or confirmed a hunch. One question often lingers: does this actually play out in my relationship, day to day?

In the article that follows, I explore attachment and how it shapes your relationships. If you recognise yourself in this theme, I designed an attachment style test that helps you take stock of your attachment style and its influence on your relationship. It comes with a guide to extend your reflection beyond the results. Worth knowing: I also offer ScanMyLove, a tool that analyses couple conversations from a simple export, to better understand a relationship's dynamic.

Two methods, two kinds of evidence

The psychological test: a declarative measure

A personality or attachment test relies on self-assessment: you answer a series of questions about your usual behaviors, feelings, and reactions. It's a scientifically validated method (standardized scales, normed questionnaires such as the ECR for attachment), but it has an inherent limitation: it measures what you think you do, not necessarily what you actually do in the moment of a real conversation.

Conversation analysis: a behavioral measure

ScanMyLove asks no questions at all. It observes raw textual facts: how long do you take to reply when your partner seems distant? How many messages do you send before getting a response? Does your vocabulary shift depending on the conversation's tone? These behavioral indicators, cross-referenced through 14 clinical psychology models (including Bowlby's attachment theory), produce a factual snapshot rather than a declarative one.

What cross-referencing the two reveals

If the test says "secure" but the analysis detects anxious signals

That's not a contradiction: it can mean this style shows up specifically with this partner, in this particular relational context — a general test doesn't capture the dynamics unique to one specific relationship. Conversation analysis lets you observe what a broad, general test simply cannot see.

If the test says "avoidant" and the analysis confirms it

Convergence between the two methods strengthens the finding's reliability. The ScanMyLove report then goes further by showing concretely how this avoidance shows up in your messages: lengthened response times, short phrasing, absence of affectionate words — backed by real excerpts from your conversation.

For emotional dependency

The emotional dependency test assesses general traits (need for validation, fear of abandonment, difficulty being alone). Conversation analysis objectifies these traits concretely: a disproportionate frequency of messages sent without reply, repeated reassurance-seeking phrasing, immediate emotional reactivity to the slightest silence. Two angles on the same phenomenon — one theoretical, one factual.

How conversation analysis works

The principle differs from a test: instead of answering questions, you directly import an export of your conversation (WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Instagram, SMS, or screenshots). The tool processes the text, structures the messages, and applies 14 clinical grids — Gottman, attachment styles, Young's schemas, cognitive distortions, the Walker cycle, the Duluth wheel, among others.

A free dashboard first displays basic statistics (exchange ratio, response time, time heatmap). A paid report (starting at €1.99) then deepens the analysis with a structured diagnosis, illustrated with quotes drawn from your own messages.

In what order should you proceed?

There's no required order, but two logics emerge:

Test first, conversation second — the test gives you a theoretical framework to which you can attach the observations from the conversation analysis. You already know what you're looking to verify. Conversation first, test second — the conversation analysis reveals an unexpected pattern, which the test then helps name more precisely and place within a recognized psychological framework.

Either way, combining both approaches — declarative and behavioral — gives you a fuller understanding than either method alone.

Limits to keep in mind

Neither the test nor the conversation analysis constitutes a clinical diagnosis. An online psychological test is a psychoeducation tool, not a medical exam. A conversation analysis objectifies textual patterns, but ignores tone of voice, facial expressions, and life context. Both tools complement therapeutic work — they don't replace it.

Neither an online psychological test nor a conversation analysis replaces a consultation with a mental health professional.

FAQ

Do the attachment test and the ScanMyLove analysis always give the same result?

Not necessarily, and that's not abnormal: the test measures a self-reported general tendency, the conversation analysis observes real behavior within one specific relationship. The two can diverge slightly without either being "wrong."

Can I run the conversation analysis without having taken a test first?

Yes, the two tools are independent. You can import your conversation directly into ScanMyLove without having taken any psychological test beforehand.

How much does the conversation analysis cost?

The dashboard is free. The detailed report starts at €1.99 (Essential plan, 8 analysis sections).
In short: A psychological test, such as the attachment style test, measures a general tendency based on your answers at a given moment. It's reliable, but declarative: you're answering questions about yourself. ScanMyLove approaches the problem from the other direction: instead of asking how you think you behave, it observes how you actually behave in your conversations with your partner — over weeks or months of messages. The two approaches are complementary, not competing: the test provides a theoretical framework, conversation analysis checks whether that framework holds up in practice.
