Ray Kroc, born in 1902, was no entrepreneurial prodigy. His journey before McDonald's was that of a man who experimented with various professions – ambulance driver, jazz musician, paper cup salesman, real estate agent – without ever finding the resounding success he seemed to covet so much. It was at the age of 52, in 1954, that he discovered the restaurant of brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald in San Bernardino, California. Early maladaptive schemas, conceptualised by Dr Jeffrey Young, are deep and persistent patterns of thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations that develop from childhood and repeat throughout life, influencing our perceptions and behaviours. In Ray Kroc, several schemas could have played a central role in his personality and career.
1. The Failure Schema (Defectiveness/Shame)
