Test: Are You Not Being Listened To? (Being Interrupted)

📋 Assess your situation — Does this article speak to you? Take one of our 200+ psychological tests for immediate personalised results.

This test is a SCREENING self-assessment of a situation in which you are not listened to in your interactions (couple, family, work, friendship). It explores four dimensions: being interrupted or seeing the other person monopolise the exchange, not being listened to and having what you say minimised, conversational invisibility (your opinion is not sought, decisions are made without you) and withdrawal with its effect on self-esteem (giving up on speaking, feeling that you do not count). A lively conversation or an occasional interruption is not a difficulty in itself: what matters is the repetition and its effect on you. This test makes no diagnosis and passes no judgement on the other person; it sheds light on a situation you are subjected to, to help you regain your place and your voice.

In the article that follows, I explore communication within the couple. If you recognise yourself in this theme, I designed a couple communication test that helps you take stock of your communication patterns as a couple. It comes with a guide to extend your reflection beyond the results. I also wrote two books on this subject, Saving Your Relationship: Communication, Crises, and Renewal and Understanding Your Attachment Style, if you would like to go further.

What the test measures

  • The other person interrupts you, talks over you or monopolises the exchange.
  • What you say is ignored, minimised or deflected; you are not really listened to.
  • Your opinion is not sought, decisions are made without you; you do not exist in the exchange.
  • Giving up on speaking, feeling that you do not count, impact on self-esteem.
  • Measures your current readiness to acknowledge the impact of what you have experienced and to begin a process of rebuilding and settling.

How to interpret your score

The result is read as an intensity, not as a diagnosis:

  • Situation not very pronounced: All the dimensions appear low or balanced in your answers. You do not seem markedly exposed to not being listened to: interruptions, lack of listening, invisibility and withdrawal do not structure what you are currently experiencing. This profile indicates exchanges that are broadly respectful of your voice. It is a useful reference point for this specific context, to be reread with nuance if the situation changes; it says nothing about all your relationships.
  • Moderate situation: Several moderate traits emerge in your overall profile. Some facets — being interrupted, not listened to, invisible or withdrawn — show an intermittent presence that deserves attention without dominating your experience. This level indicates that not being listened to becomes active in certain contexts without forming an all-encompassing climate. Naming it and allowing yourself to speak up early prevents withdrawal from settling in and affecting your self-esteem.
  • Pronounced situation: Clear traits emerge from your overall profile. Several facets — interruptions, lack of listening, invisibility, withdrawal — appear active and significantly colour your exchanges. This level indicates an established dynamic in which your voice has little room, likely to generate loneliness, frustration and damage to self-esteem. This result deserves careful exploration. It is the screening of a situation you are subjected to, not a diagnosis or a judgement: having a voice in the exchanges that concern you is legitimate.
  • Very pronounced situation (non-diagnostic screening): Dominant traits stand out markedly in your overall profile. The dimensions of not being listened to — interruptions, lack of listening, invisibility, withdrawal — appear to form an intense and all-encompassing climate, likely to generate real suffering, isolation and a loss of confidence. Relationally, this level may be part of an imbalanced dynamic and deserves serious attention. This result identifies a situation you are subjected to, not a diagnosis or a judgement: regaining your place and your voice is possible, and you do not have to do it alone.
