Child Sleep: When Poor Sleep Changes Everything Else

📋 Assess your situation — Does this article speak to you? Take one of our 200+ psychological tests for immediate personalised results.

Sleep plays a fundamental role in child development — memory consolidation, emotional regulation, growth, immunity. A child who doesn't sleep enough, or who has poor-quality sleep, will function below their capacities on all these fronts — often without adults or the child themselves making the connection.

In the article that follows, I explore anxiety and chronic worry. If you recognise yourself in this theme, I designed a generalized anxiety test that helps you take stock of your everyday anxiety level. It comes with a guide to extend your reflection beyond the results. I also wrote a book on this subject, Overcoming Anxiety and Stress, if you would like to go further.

What lack of sleep produces in children

On mood and behaviour

An under-sleeping child can be irritable, emotionally unstable, and display behaviours resembling those of ADHD: agitation, difficulty staying still, impulsivity. These symptoms can disappear simply by restoring sufficient sleep.

On learning

The consolidation of academic learning happens primarily during sleep. A child who sleeps little retains learning less well, has more concentration difficulties, and their academic results can suffer as a result. I go deeper into this mechanism in The Practical CBT Guide.

On physical health

Sleep is a time of cellular repair, growth hormone secretion, and immune strengthening. Under-sleeping children are more frequently ill and may show delayed growth in severe cases.

Sleep needs by age

  • 1-2 years: 11-14h (night + nap)
  • 3-5 years: 10-13h
  • 6-12 years: 9-12h
  • 13-18 years: 8-10h

What helps

Regular bedtime routines, a cool and dark bedroom, no screens 1 hour before bed, stable bedtime even at weekends — these simple principles, applied consistently, significantly improve the quality and duration of sleep.
